The first thing you notice when landing at Phuket is that it could actually be anywhere. It is very western, and modern compared to what we have seen through the rest of Thailand. Patong beach – were our hotel is, is still under going massive reconstruction – obviously from the tsunami. Apparently the first two floors of our hotel were completely underwater as a result of the tsunami so there is a lot of banging and crashing as they are still building and will be for at lest another year. The beach itself is very lively, quite a lot of people about but you can see that it can cater for many, many more. In the newspaper it has said that there is less than 20% occupancy across the board in Phuket! The weather is however very nice.
I think the most major difference between the rest of Thailand and Phuket is that the people here are unhappy which is not Thai at all. Everywhere we have been in Thailand the people are always happy and will say hello and smile, but in Phuket this seems long gone…
We didn’t really come with any expectations, but we really feel that we were spoiled by Koh Samui.
The food prices are a lot higher here than anywhere else in Thailand. The tsunami has really affected the economy. But the restaurant that we decided on was about 120B for burger and fries, and looked really nice so grabbed a table and ordered. After we had eaten a band started playing so we thought we would hang around for a bit and see we’re it went – ordering deserts at the same time. The band was really quite average but nice enough.
