How is there any other way to see the opera then in a 2000 year old Amphitheatre? Well that’s what we decided so we headed back to Varona just for the night and see the Opera. It was around 10 that we caught a bus back hopeful to be able to get some accommodation. That turned out to be a huge ordeal, there was nothing in our price range only 3 star hotels, we we’re about at the stage of booking a room at 150 Euros per night, when I finally stumbled on a one star with one room left. Felling relieved we made way to an internet café to do some much needed checking of email etc. By the time that we had finished we suddenly reralised that we we’re cutting it really fine for getting to the opera the hour and a half early that they recommended we did to get a good seat but we didn’t really believe that this could possibly be an issue anyway – stupid us! We arrived after having a nice pasta for dinner to find that the stands were almost full (well in the cheap seats anyway), so we did the best that we could and got a seat that could see the whole stage but with a thin lighting pole in the middle. It was such a feeling to be in a Arena that had been there for 2000 years and was still practising public entertainment although be it different that it’s original which possibly would have been more exciting than the opera, but never the less it was defiantly worth it. We were sitting on marble and had bought our Kathmandu travel pillows for a little cushioning, but by the end we both wanted to have to have good walk before heading home. Verona is just such a nice city to roam around that we had an hour walk including Galati getting home around midnight fully ready for sleep.
