Christmas in Scotland

Well it really is an experience to be in a proper castle in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. It was quite a journey up with one nights stopover in Edinburgh and a very long bus trip the next day. The highlands arn't to dissimilar to New Zealand really, but much colder, we arrived just as it was getting dark and with the skys clear for as far as we could see I knew that there would be a good frost for Christmas day! The castle itself is massive catering for well over 200 people and is complete with massive old oil paintings, statues and a room for every purpose you can think of. We got checked in and had a good look around before it was time for dinner and party time. Over night the temperature plummeted so it was very white when we woke, and after a breath takingly cold shower - the pipes had frozen, we went down for our champagne breakfast. For the rest of the day we went for a bit of a trip around the surrounding area before getting back to the castle for Christmas dinner at 4pm. We were wined and dined for three hours before adjourning to the bar for a long night of Christmas drinks and dancing! It wasn’t as cold the next morning so we had nice and hot showers before jumping on the bus and starting the journey back to Edinburgh past the Lake District including the infamous Loch Ness, through the valley of tears, drove through the city were William Wallis came from and a final stop off to meet Henry the hairy cooow - you have to put on your best Scottish accent and emphasise the oo's! So after what seemed to be my whole life again we made it back to Edinburgh before dinner of freshly made Abbideen Angus beef burgers over looking one of the nicest old cities in Europe.
So that was the trip really we had a lot of fun but are happy with the knowledge that this will be the last Christmas without family and friends for quite a while. I'd have to say as its just not the same!
